The Academy of Medical Science of the Serbian Medical Society was founded on 15 December 1976 at the 90th regular annual meeting of the SMS.
It was necessary for an entire century to go by since the founding of the Serbian Medical Society (1872) for the idea about the founding of the Medical Academy to blossom into an actual organisation, which would reflect the attained native position of medical science and scientific thought in the best and most effective manner.
The most important tasks of the Serbian Medical Society’s Academy of Medical Science are to:
- encourage the development of scientific work through fundamental and applied research in all areas of medicine and thus contribute to the development of medical thought and the improvement of the health-care of the people,
- inspire the advancement of the social reputation and importance of scientific work, which is of vital interest for the improvement of the health condition of the people, the organisation of the health-care service, and in particular for preventive measures,
- analyse the problems related to the teaching and educating of all types of medical personnel.
The SMS’s Academy of Medical Science comprises our most well-known thinkers from various medical scientific and expert fields. It is composed of 150 full-time, 65 part-time, and 68 honorary members, 49 of whom are based abroad. The selection of new members of the academy takes place every two years.
The basic and most important activities of the Academy are thematically defined scientific gatherings as well as inaugural lectures given by newly chosen members.
To date, the Academy of Medical Science has issued numerous publicationns and recently a monography on Academy development published on the occasion of its 30th anniversary.
