Since it s founding , more than sixty years ago, Serbian Society of Otorhinolaryngology, as a part of Serbian Medical Society, has been, in proffesional and organizational terms, the strongest link which helped ear-nose-throat specialists to develop closer ties with organisations in the country and abroad.
Serbian Society of Otorhinolaryngology was founded on February 1st 1948. Proffesor Milan Fotic, from present ORL and MFS clinic of Klinical center of Serbia, was the founder and the first president.
At an inaugural meeting the statute of the Society and basic aims were proclaimed: professional training of physicians, cherishing doctor ethics, cooperation with other specialities, cooperation with state authorities.
Under the auspices of Serbian Society of Otorhinolaryngology in 1961st was founded „ORL week“, as an annual professional and scientific conference. Its establishment has to do with the name of proffesor Srecko Podvinec, the head of present ORL and MFS clinic of Klinical center of Serbia in Belgrade. He came up with an idea of annual meeting of ORL specialists and physicians of similar medical fields as well as representatives of pharmaceutical companies who would exchange ideas, familiarize themselves with latest technological developments in science and their profession and befriend each other. So far, there has been 50 ORL weeks. At the beginning it lasted for 5 days but in the last decade it lasts only two to three days.
Every fourth year the Congress of Serbian otolaryngologists takes place, with international participation. The last one , the 18th one, was held in September 2010. in Belgrade.
Today, the activities of Serbian Society of Otorhinolaryngology are continual and imply:
- Regular professional meetings, with participation of domestic and foreign lecturers
- Organising congresses and courses from different fields of otorhinolaryngology
- Professional and scientific advancement of members of the Socyiety
- Participating in european and world ear-nose-throat congresses
- Building closer ties between ORL specialists in Serbia and collegues from abroad
- Participating in european projects in the field of otorhinolaryngology
